The Anti-Social Media Experiment

Despite being a fairly mindful, low-tech human toward the
end of 2025 I was really feeling the addictive and negative effects of social media.

I want to FREE myself from
social media.

The fangs of modern technology were sinking their teeth in and I was catching a case of ZRBR (Zombie Robot Brain Rot)

Perhaps you are also familiar with some of the symptoms:

  • Mindless scrolling

  • Excessive checking

  • Sitting on your couch and all of the sudden realizing you are scrolling on IG and not even remembering picking your phone up

  • Being out to dinner with your friend and when they go to the bathroom checking social media

  • Scrolling while waiting in line at the grocery store instead of daydreaming or actually socially engaging with real, live people

Look ,I am not at all proud of this but I have a feeling I am not alone.

STEP AWAY FROM THE DEVICE

I decided to take a beat, delete the apps and try to conjure up a new way to be in healthier relationship with it all.

I signed off before Christmas and intended on coming back January 1 but it felt so good that I gave myself another week.

After that week I noticed I never wanted to come back!

But let's face it, in this day and age as an independent, small business owner having no social media presence may not be my best move. I thought about hiring somebody to handle my accounts, but that just didn't feel right, it wouldn’t be my voice, it wouldn’t have my signature. I looked into getting rid of my smartphone, getting a flip phone and only accessing the FB & IG from my laptop but the functionality is not designed for it. And if I am being totally honest I kinda like easy access to a camera, using talk to text and having navigation.

Ultimately I realized I need to shift my mentality around social media and treat it as intentional work instead of mindlessness.

So this is my plan:

  • Download the apps on my phone for 2 days a week to schedule all of my posts for the week & respond to my messages

  • Delete the apps for the rest of the week & be FREE

I'm sharing this with you mostly for accountability but also to give you a heads up that if you do not hear from me

It is not because I am not caring about you, it is because I am caring about me.

Lastly, I truly believe this is something we all need to be cognizant of these days. These devices are stealing our precious time, brain power and presence.

Here’s to staying connected mindfully.

P.S. Please Beware of that sneaky ZRBR
