Get Composting Already!

What if I told you that you could cut the waste that you are personally responsible for by 1/3 with hardly any effort. IT’S CALLED COMPOSTING! And there are so many ways to do it. It is all about a perspective shift. Your food scraps are not garbage, they are energy that is meant to be recycled back into the Earth responsibly, effectively and productively. This enables you to create a closed loop system in your own backyard so that you can create beautiful, nutrient rich soil to grow your own food and flowers.

Here are 5 easy ways to get started:

1. Cold Composting - Your cheapest, easiest option. Get a pile started and let things naturally decompose. Your pile must consist of both carbon and nitrogen based items. According to the USDA, the ideal carbon to nitrogen rate for optimal microbial action in a compost pile is between 20:1 and 40:1, with 24:1 being the absolute sweet spot. Here's a quickie on WHAT TO ADD and WHAT NOT TO ADD:

2. Hot Composting - Get a tumbler and speed up the process. Heres some options for ya… https://www.lowes.com/pl/Composters-Composters-accessories-Outdoor-tools-equipment-Outdoors/4294612866

3. Compost Tower - My personal favorite. Get a 4” PVC pipe drill ½ holes in the bottom foot. Burry the pipe a foot deep so the holes are underground. Drop some soil into the pipe along with 100 red wiggler worms (https://unclejimswormfarm.com/). Then add your vegan food scraps. The worms will eat the food scraps, migrate through the holes, create worm castings (aka worm shit), reproduce and fertilize your garden! Here’s more details…

4. Vermicomposting - Yup we are talking worms! Here’s the deets… https://morningchores.com/vermicomposting/

5. Local Compost Pick-up Service - That right this wonderful service now exists right here in Bucks County, PA. Check out KONA COMPOSTING https://www.konacompost.com/

*** TIP - Keep a tupperware container in your fridge that you collect your vegan food scraps in. This way you don’t have to take it out everyday, it doesn’t smell and there are not fruit flies involved!
