The CommUNITY Peace Garden at The TileWorks

The CommUNITY Peace Garden at The TileWorks aims to make organic food public, free and accessible for whoever needs it.

I am stoked to report that another one of my life goals is underway! I have been working on creating a food for all, free for all, CommUNITY Peace Garden at my favorite site in Doylestown, The TileWorks. I am starting small but over time I see it growing and expanding, feeding more and more members of the community.

I believe everyone should have access to real (aka organic) food but sadly, many do not because of price and/or availability. Through my Peace Gardens project I have enabled over 50 households in our community to start growing organic food in their backyard. With The CommUNITY Peace Garden at The TileWorks the idea is to make organic food public, free and accessible for whoever needs it. A community garden just feels like the next logical step in my mission to create a greener, kinder and healthier community. The CommUNITY Peace Garden will not only grow organic produce it will also serve as an interactive educational tool demonstrating soil regeneration, biodiversity, composting, waste reduction and more. All are welcome.

Like every Peace Garden, all aspects of the creation have been intentionally, chosen, designed and implemented to create as little harm and as much peace as possible.

- Seedling: organically grown by Kind Earth Growers in Ottsville, PA

- Soil: 50/50 bedding mix/mushroom soil donated from Sparks in Doylestown, PA

- Raised beds: hand-built from reclaimed lumber

- Bamboo: locally sourced and hand harvested

- Compost Towers: repurposed PVC piping and red wiggler worms from Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm

- Peace Flags: hand-painted and made from a recycled umbrella

- Fencing: reclaimed and salvaged

- And last but not least this garden is created with pure, organic LOVE

As modern humans we have separated ourselves from nature. This disconnect makes it easier for us to make choices that lead to environmental and health crises. In order to make a positive shift, we must remember that We are Nature. A big step in that rememberance is becoming an active part in our own food systems, participating in the process and seeing food as medicine is a great place to start.

Katia McGuirk, Executive Director of The TileWorks, was all welcoming about the project. Katia had a community garden in her plans but it just hadn’t come together yet so when I called wanting to donate the garden she was overjoyed. It was divine timing.
